What Is Pilates?

Pilates is a system of more than 500 exercises that seeks to build strength, flexibility, endurance, and coordination, thus creating long, lean, and balanced musculature.

Developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 1900's, Mr. Pilates believed that our physical and mental health are intertwined, and he designed his program around the principals supporting this idea, including concentration, precision, control, breathing, and flowing movements.

The method encompasses exercises on both apparatus as well as a mat, and it targets the deepest muscles of the torso, inner thighs, buttocks, and lower back in order to strengthen the body from the inside out.

"Contrology (Pilates) develops the body uniformly, corrects wrong postures, restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind, and elevates the spirit."
